Engineers,
Let’s not kid ourselves, a war is brewing in the social media sphere and only some of the participants will still be relevant by the end of 2016…
The question is, who will it be? Remember Digg, Friendster & MySpace? Someone will inevitably join the cast of the forgotten, sooner rather than later.
Can Twitter continue to survive the arrival of Google+? Will Facebook stay king of the hill? Is Tumblr the future of blogging or was it just a nice way to share funny pictures now irrelevant with the arrival of Pinterest? What about Instagram? Reddit keeps growing uncontrollably, but is it actually a threat to anybody?
Still… someone must perish. Who will it be?
It’s only a matter of time before Twitter becomes a ghost town
Google+ does all the things Twitter does, but Twitter can’t support the long list of features available in Google+.
Also on Google+, you can post pictures and videos directly in posts, launch immediately into a video chat, send your posts to nonmembers and even present all your posts marked ‘Public’ as a blog available to anyone.
Not bloody likely. Twitter does not need to worry about Google+
Regardless of what Google+ does down the road it isn’t a threat to Twitter. Period.
… that being said, Google+ is now Outpacing Twitter
Google Plus may be carving out a niche in the crowded social media world: Whereas Facebook is the go-to service for connecting friends, Google Plus is more often used to meet strangers who share common interests, an area previously dominated by Twitter.
How much influence does Google+ really carry? Should you change your social media strategies?
Google+ isn’t only a social network. It’s the very backbone (and future) of Google itself. If you’re a writer, this is either going to be very good for your career, or you’ll risk becoming relatively invisible online.
Will Facebook crush Twitter and Google+?
Facebook isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
That being said, Google+ is gaining ground, while Twitter is losing momentum.
Can Pinterest Continue to Gain Ground in a crowded Social Media World?
Instagram is bigger than Pinterest, but Pinterest is growing faster. Will the trend continue, or will Instagram hold it’s ground?
Visual media platforms, like Pinterest and Instagram, are relatively new, and they’re growing fast. As they adapt to find their niche in the ever-crowded social media market, both companies will strive to attract marketers’ attention.
With Digg Annihilated, who will reddit Consume Next?
It’s hard to say how reddit fits into the whole situation, which is exactly what makes reddit the most dangerous social platform to anybody not paying attention.
Reddit has become the go-to social news platform, and is often the source of interesting things you read on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, etc…
If you’re looking for news on any topic, reddit is the place to go to get the latest information on anything, including breaking news (which is an area Twitter previously owned).
… but, should reddit be feared by other social networks, or is reddit an ally that compliments other services? Maybe only mainstream media needs to worry about reddit… Either way, with iGoogle going offline, I suspect reddit will become the start page for many people going forward, and that’s a lot of traffic.
What about tumblr, who cares right?
… Tumblr is a sort of blogging platform, except that it’s full of pictures, link sharing, and networking with people having similar interests.
That’s why everyone should be worried about tumblr.
It’s a simple social platform that enables easy sharing of information and media. It allows self-expression, and allows users to have unique customized pages. It does it all, in a simple way that is more popular than Facebook among those under 25 years old.
If you think tumblr is on it’s way out, you’re wrong. It’s only the beginning.
You can wave goodbye to blogspot though, or any other blogging platform that isn’t WordPress.
Who’s new?
You might want to keep an eye on Evernote. It’s a tool designed for notetaking and archiving.
Increasingly, Evernote will facilitate and enable collaboration and teamwork.
… Eventually, you’ll start to notice you’re using it more and more because it makes your life easier… which means you’re spending less and less time somewhere else…
At the end of the day, it’s all about whose delivering the most ad views.
There’s others lurking in the background…
Another interesting player is Disqus. More and more blogs use disqus for their commenting system which gives the platform a significant reach. It’s not a full blown social platform, but users have profiles and spend lots of time interacting via comments.
… and what if Disqus launched forums, or additional social features? They are well positioned for a slow invasion into your daily life.
And hey, Bebo is on it’s way back with a great new intro video, so you never know… The tide can change quick.

What do you think? Who will be left in 5 years?
Make a bold prediction.
What do you think the landscape will look like in 5 years?
How will mobile kill or launch new platforms? Take a look at your phone, which of these social networks made it to your front screen?
