Notepad++ is the ultimate notepad tool. I’m not talking about sticky notes or crap like that. Notepad++ is a simple text editor which will let you quickly open and edit all sorts of files including txt, html, php, py, c, java, etc… If you work on software development, Notepad++ is the best IDE there is, especially when you just want to make a few quick edits to a file and don’t need to recompile.
LibreOffice
For those times when you need something with more features than Notepad++, LibreOffice is the best replacement for Microsoft Office. You’ll have all the same functionality as Word, Excel and PowerPoint, except you’ll be using free open source software.
GIMP
Need to do some image editing? No problem! GIMP is basically the free open source alternative to Adobe Photoshop. For the simple use I make of graphics editing software, I’ve found it can do everything I could with Photoshop and more. And well, when the cost is $0, it’s hard to complain…
