Notepad++
Notepad++ is the ultimate notepad tool. I’m not talking about sticky notes or crap like that. Notepad++ is a simple text editor which will let you quickly open and edit all sorts of files including txt, html, php, py, c, java, etc… If you work on software development, Notepad++ is the best IDE there is, especially when you just want to make a few quick edits to a file and don’t need to recompile.
LibreOffice
For those times when you need something with more features than Notepad++, LibreOffice is the best replacement for Microsoft Office. You’ll have all the same functionality as Word, Excel and PowerPoint, except you’ll be using free open source software.
GIMP
Need to do some image editing? No problem! GIMP is basically the free open source alternative to Adobe Photoshop. For the simple use I make of graphics editing software, I’ve found it can do everything I could with Photoshop and more. And well, when the cost is $0, it’s hard to complain…
Audacity
Audacity is a free open source audio editor and recorder. Excellent for creating that music mix to play in the background of your YouTube videos!
FileZilla

FreeMind is a very easy to use mind mapping tool. It’s a great way to brainstorm with yourself and discover new ideas you didn’t even know you had! Eclipse

Eclipse is an open source integrated development environment (IDE) used for programming. It gained popularity as a JAVA IDE, but plugins and extensions now exist making it an excellent option for any programming language.

Every now and then you need to take a break from work. Battle City is a free open source game that’s a great download if you’re looking for something to play and even better if you’re a programmer or kid in school looking for an interesting project to learn some new things.
